☰ Strategic Framework

Why this project? Why now?

The Metal element governs the Lungs and the Large Intestine — the organs of letting go. When Metal is balanced, you breathe freely, your boundaries are clear, and you release what no longer serves you. When it is out of balance, you hold on: to grief, to clutter, to things that should have been released.

The herbs of the Metal element work with this energy. Chrysanthemum (Ju Hua) clears the Lungs and cools the Liver, while Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) moves blood and settles the spirit. Growing them yourself means you have these allies fresh, on hand, and free.

This project aligns with the Metal Phase (Autumn) — the season of harvest, release, and preparation for the quiet of winter. As the garden winds down outdoors, you bring the pharmacy inside.

What phase are we in?

Metal. The energy of harvest and letting go. This is not a time for grand new projects outdoors, but for gathering what you have grown and bringing it inward. The windowsill pharmacy is a perfect match.

☰ Materials List

  • Chrysanthemum seeds or starter plant — look for Chrysanthemum morifolium (the medicinal variety, not ornamental). Seeds ~$5.
  • Dan Shen seeds or root cuttingsSalvia miltiorrhiza. Seeds ~$6.
  • Two 8-inch pots with drainage holes — ~$10 total, or upcycle yogurt containers.
  • Potting soil — standard organic mix. ~$6.
  • Small pebbles or gravel — for drainage layer. ~$3.
  • South-facing windowsill (or grow light if unavoidable).
  • Pruning shears — any small scissors will do.

Total estimated cost: ~$40 (and most items you already have).

Synthetic waste: Zero.

☰ Procedure

  1. Prepare the pots. Add a 1-inch layer of gravel at the bottom of each pot for drainage. Fill with potting soil to 1 inch below the rim.
  2. Sow the Chrysanthemum. Sprinkle seeds on the surface and cover with a very thin layer of soil (1/8 inch). Chrysanthemum needs light to germinate — do not bury deep. Water gently.
  3. Sow the Dan Shen. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep, 3-4 seeds per pot. Thin to the strongest seedling after germination (14-21 days). Water gently.
  4. Place on a south-facing windowsill. Both plants need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. If your window doesn't get enough, supplement with a basic grow light 6 inches above the pots.
  5. Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Dan Shen prefers slightly drier conditions. Chrysanthemum likes consistent moisture but not soggy soil. Stick a finger in — if dry at the first knuckle, water.
  6. Harvest Chrysanthemum flowers. Pick flowers when they are fully open, ideally in the morning after the dew has dried. Spread on a screen or clean cloth in a warm, dark, ventilated space for 7-10 days.
  7. Harvest Dan Shen roots. Wait until the plant's second growing season (or 8-10 months from seed). Dig up the roots, wash thoroughly, chop into thin rounds, and dry in the same way.
  8. Store properly. Keep dried Chrysanthemum flowers and Dan Shen slices in airtight glass jars, away from light and moisture. They will keep for 12 months.

How to use your home pharmacy

Chrysanthemum tea: Steep 3-5 dried flowers in hot water for 5 minutes. Drink in the evening when you feel overheated, irritable, or have red, dry eyes. It cools and settles.

Dan Shen decoction: Simmer 3-5 thin slices in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes, then strain. Drink once daily when you feel the need to move stagnant energy — emotional heaviness, fading motivation, or physical stiffness in the chest.

These are food-grade herbal allies, not prescriptions. Listen to your body. If you are on medication or have a health condition, check with a qualified practitioner before introducing new herbs.

What to expect

Year 1: Chrysanthemum will flower in late summer to autumn of the first year. Dan Shen will establish leaves and roots but is not ready to harvest until year two.

Year 2 and beyond: Chrysanthemum is a perennial — it will return each year. Dan Shen's roots will be thick enough to harvest in the autumn. Take half the roots and leave the rest to regrow. A single plant provides for years.
